Seven alleged members of German far-left group face trial over series of attacks

Seven individuals accused of being the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost began their trial on Tuesday, facing charges for attacks targeting far-right activists that earned them the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

Global terrorist designation and prosecution case

Recently, the US government designated the organization as a terrorist group along with multiple additional left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

German prosecutors state the network was behind targeting sites in Germany and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the repeated targeting of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a meeting point for far-right supporters.

Certain individuals are said to have using hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some with serious injuries.

Trial details and international connections

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is scheduled to continue until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden. Two defendants, named as Johann G and Paul M., are additionally accused for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, around an annual event known as the “day of honor” that draws far-right participants from throughout the continent.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T, is currently on trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against far-right activists in the lead-up to the same rally in that year.

Historical background and organizational structure

The former East Germany has historically served as a breeding ground for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that oppose them.

Authorities characterize Johann G as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, responsible for planning attacks and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M., he is accused of organizing training sessions where radical left activists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. At depots overseen by the suspect, the network reportedly stockpiled hammers, pepper spray, concealment items and communication devices.

Previous convictions and global responses

A different activist formerly involved with the group, Lina E., became a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing makes group members barred from entering the United States, freezes any assets they may have within the American economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany applauded the US decision and urged the government in Berlin to take similar action. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The threat posed by the organization has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have received convictions or remain detained.”
